The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) has a reputation as the perfect beginner reptile, and that reputation is largely deserved — on one condition: the enclosure has to be built, running and measured before the animal comes home. Most problems that land young dragons at the vet are not infectious diseases but the consequences of a bad setup: an undersized tank, exhausted UVB, a basking spot that is too cool, and a random diet. Here is a complete configuration with real numbers.
Enclosure size — the minimum is not the same as comfort
For an adult dragon (males reach 45–60 cm total length) the absolute minimum is 120 × 60 × 60 cm (length × depth × height). Popular 60 cm cubes and 80 × 40 cm tanks make a thermal gradient impossible: with a 40 °C basking spot, the cool end of such a short box sits at 33–35 °C and the animal has nowhere to escape the heat. Thermoregulation is a reptile's primary control system for digestion and immunity — without a temperature difference it simply does not work.
The 60 cm depth matters as much as the length. It lets you place a basking platform on one side and a hide on the other without lining everything up in a single row. The 60 cm height keeps the heat lamp at a safe distance from the substrate.
A juvenile can go straight into the final enclosure — the story about "stress caused by too much space" is a myth. You only need to furnish it properly: more branches and visual breaks, two hides, and insects offered in a dish or by tweezers so the youngster does not have to hunt across the whole floor.
Wood or glass
A wooden enclosure (OSB or laminated board with a glass front and sliding doors) holds temperature far more steadily than a glass tank — three walls and a ceiling insulate, so a lower-wattage lamp maintains the same basking temperature and night-time drops are gentler. Glass radiates heat in every direction, forces stronger bulbs, and leaves the animal feeling exposed.
With a wooden build, plan cross ventilation: an intake low on the cool side and an outlet high on the warm side. Two 10 × 30 cm vents are enough. A sealed box invites respiratory infections; a box full of holes makes the gradient impossible to hold.
Heating and the thermal gradient
- Basking spot: 40–42 °C, measured on the surface of the platform with an infrared thermometer, not with a gauge hanging in mid-air. Juveniles tolerate 42–44 °C.
- Cool end: 26–28 °C, at the opposite side of the enclosure.
- Night: 18–22 °C — in a normal heated home no extra warmth is needed. The night drop is physiological and desirable.
Heat should come from a lamp producing both light and infrared (a halogen or spot bulb, 50–100 W depending on height and insulation). Heat mats under the floor are useless for a dragon: it basks from above and does not read belly heat as a signal to stop, which risks burns. Run the lamp through a thermostat with a probe placed next to the platform — an unregulated bulb can push the basking spot 6–8 °C higher on a hot day.
UVB — never the place to save money
Bearded dragons are desert animals with very high UVB requirements. Without it the body cannot synthesise vitamin D3, cannot absorb calcium, and within months develops metabolic bone disease.
- Use a linear T5 HO 10.0 / 12 % tube spanning roughly two thirds of the enclosure length. Compact coils and E27 bulbs give a beam that is too narrow and too weak.
- Distance to the animal: 30–45 cm, depending on the model, the reflector and whether the light passes through mesh (mesh absorbs 30–40 % of UVB — shorten the distance then).
- Replace the tube every 9–12 months even while it still lights up. UVB output falls much faster than visible light.
- Photoperiod: 12–14 hours in summer, 10 hours in winter, all on a timer.
Substrate and furnishings
For adults, a clay and sand mix (roughly 1:1) or ready-made loam is best: it keeps its structure, allows digging and does not shift loosely. Use a layer 8–12 cm deep.
For juveniles up to about six months, paper towel or a terrarium liner is safer. Youngsters strike at food hard and swallow substrate along with the insect, which risks impaction. Avoid fine calcium sand and crushed walnut shell entirely.
Minimum furnishings: a flat basking platform or stone under the lamp, a hide at the cool end, branches for climbing, a shallow water dish changed daily, plus a digital thermometer on the cool side and an infrared thermometer for spot checks.
Feeding and supplements
- Juveniles: 70–80 % insects and 20–30 % greens, fed daily, often two or three short sessions a day.
- Adults: the reverse — 70–80 % plants, insects two or three times a week.
Staple insects: dubia and turkestan roaches, locusts and crickets. Mealworms must not be the staple — poor calcium to phosphorus ratio and far too much fat. Greens: rocket, lamb's lettuce, endive, dandelion, kale, chicory, pepper, squash. Fruit only occasionally and in small amounts; avoid spinach and rhubarb. No insect should be wider than the gap between the dragon's eyes.
Supplements: plain calcium dusted daily for juveniles and two or three times weekly for adults; calcium with D3 once or twice a week, especially when the UVB source is weak or nearing replacement; a multivitamin once a week, never mixed into the same dose as D3. Signs of metabolic bone disease that mean an immediate vet visit: trembling limbs, difficulty lifting the body, a rubbery jaw, a curved spine or tail, and refusal to bask.

Pre-purchase checklist
- The enclosure has been assembled and running for at least three to five days.
- Basking surface measured with an infrared thermometer at 40–42 °C.
- Cool end stable at 26–28 °C, nights not below 18 °C.
- T5 HO UVB installed, distance measured, installation date written down.
- Timer set to 12–14 hours of light.
- Thermostat connected with the probe at the platform.
- Substrate matched to the animal's age.
- Feeders and supplements already in the house.
- A reptile-experienced vet identified in advance.
Common beginner mistakes
- Buying a small tank "for now" and postponing the real one.
- Reading temperature from a sticker on the glass instead of the basking surface.
- Compact UVB bulbs, or a tube still in use in its third year.
- Adding night heat "so it does not get cold" — the drop is needed.
- Mealworms as a daily staple and fruit several times a week.
- Calcium sand under a juvenile.
- Housing two dragons together; this is a territorial species and males always live alone.
A well planned setup is paid for once, while cutting corners on UVB and thermostats is paid for across the animal's whole life. With correct conditions a bearded dragon lives 8–12 years and turns out to be a remarkably interactive reptile.
