Heating a Terrarium: Heat Mat or Ceramic Emitter? A Practical Comparison

Heat mat, cable, ceramic emitter, halogen or deep heat projector — each behaves differently and suits a different species. We compare them by gradient, humidity impact and running cost.

"Heat mat or ceramic emitter" is the most common question in the hobby, and the honest answer is: it depends on how your species takes in heat in the wild. Reptiles produce no body heat of their own, but different species obtain it in completely different ways — basking on a sun-warmed rock, sliding under heated bark, or absorbing radiation from stone all day. Choosing a heater is really about reproducing that mechanism.

Three ways heat travels

  • Conduction — heat passes through contact. That is a heat mat or an under-substrate cable.
  • Convection — warming the air itself. That is a ceramic emitter.
  • Radiation — infrared warms the animal's body directly. That is the sun, a halogen and a DHP.

Desert and arboreal baskers (bearded dragons, tortoises, iguanas) need radiation above all. Nocturnal ground dwellers (leopard geckos, many snakes) rely mostly on conduction from a substrate warmed during the day.

Heat mat

A flat heating film fixed under the floor or on the back wall, low powered (5–25 W) and very economical.

Pros: stable, cheap to run, does not dry the air, emits no light, ideal for belly-heat species.

Cons: raises temperature only 5–8 °C above ambient, so in a cold room it cannot be the only source. It creates no basking spot. Buried under thick substrate it becomes useless.

Use for: leopard geckos, snakes in racks and terrariums, juvenile geckos, incubation tubs. The mat should cover one third of the floor, never all of it.

Heating cable

The same principle in a different shape, handy for irregular runs, but harder to lay evenly. Never let the cable touch itself along its length — overlaps overheat locally.

Ceramic emitter

A ceramic bulb with no light output that mainly heats the air. Typically 40–250 W.

Pros: raises the temperature of a whole enclosure, works at night without disturbing the photoperiod, lasts for years.

Cons: it dries the air aggressively — in a humid setup it can pull humidity down by 20–30 percentage points. The surface is extremely hot and requires a guard.

Use for: large enclosures in cold rooms, night heating, dry setups.

Halogen / spot bulb

The closest match to the sun for basking species. It emits visible light and short-wave infrared that penetrates tissue a few millimetres deep.

Pros: creates a genuine, high-contrast basking spot, supports the day cycle, cheap.

Cons: it gives light, so it is unsuitable at night, and it needs a dimming thermostat — an on/off unit will flicker and shorten bulb life.

Use for: bearded dragons, tortoises, iguanas, day geckos, uromastyx.

Deep Heat Projector

A compromise: no light, but infrared closer to sunlight than plain ceramic. It heats the animal more than the air, so it dries the enclosure less.

Pros: round-the-clock operation, gentler on humidity, a usable basking source for nocturnal species.

Cons: the most expensive option; needs a ceramic fitting and a guard.

The thermostat matters more than the heater

  • On/off thermostat — for mats and cables.
  • Pulse thermostat — for ceramic emitters and DHPs.
  • Dimming thermostat — for halogens and anything that emits light.

Place the probe where the temperature actually matters: under the substrate next to a mat, or at the animal's back height in the basking spot. A probe dangling in mid-air measures nothing useful.

Common mistakes

  • A mat under the entire floor — it destroys the gradient.
  • A ceramic emitter in a humid setup without misting.
  • Heat rocks — the single most common cause of belly burns in snakes.
  • Stick-on glass thermometers instead of an infrared gun.
  • Running any heater without a thermostat to "save money".

Worked examples

Ball python: mat or cable under one third of the floor on an on/off thermostat at 31–32 °C, plus a DHP on a pulse thermostat if the room is cold.

Bearded dragon: 50–75 W halogen on a dimming thermostat (40–42 °C on the platform) plus linear T5 HO UVB. No mat.

Crested gecko: usually no supplementary heat above 24–26 °C; if the room is colder, a mat on the back wall, never under a humid floor.
