Incubation is the stage where the keeper has the least influence on the outcome and the greatest opportunity to ruin it. Ball python eggs are surprisingly robust and will forgive short-term swings, but two things they never forgive: temperatures above 33 °C and direct contact with liquid water.
Before the eggs arrive
A gravid female follows a recognisable cycle: ovulation shows as a massive, even swelling in the rear third of the body, the pre-lay shed follows around 16–20 days later, and the clutch is laid on average 28–32 days after that shed. That calendar lets you prepare the incubator in advance.
A week before the expected date, place a lay box in the female's tub — a closed container with damp sphagnum moss and an entry hole. Eggs laid in a dark, humid box are in better condition than eggs laid on bare paper.
Incubator and medium
Incubator
Both commercial proportional incubators and converted cool boxes with a heat cable work. The requirement is stability within ±0.3 °C and no hot spots. Run it for 48–72 hours and map the chamber with an independent probe before any eggs go in.
Medium
Vermiculite or perlite mixed with water 1:1 by weight — 500 g of vermiculite to 500 g of water. Squeezed in a fist it must not release a drop.
The alternative is substrateless incubation (SIM), where eggs rest on a plastic grid above a water layer without touching it. Very stable, but it needs a tighter tub.
Moving the eggs
Ball python eggs usually adhere into one clump. Do not pull them apart. Tearing the bonds damages surface vessels and often kills the embryo. Move the whole clump, supporting it from below.
The second rule: never rotate an egg. Within a day the embryo attaches to the top of the shell; turning it drowns the embryo. If you must move a clutch, mark the top of each egg with a soft pencil immediately.
Set the clump so it touches no wall, press it about a third of its height into the medium, and leave 3–4 cm of headroom under the lid.
Parameters
- Temperature: 31.1–31.7 °C (88–89 °F). At 30 °C incubation stretches to 65–70 days; above 32.5 °C defects become likely and above 33 °C the clutch dies.
- Humidity: 90–100 % inside the tub. Condensation on the walls is normal, as long as it does not drip onto the eggs.
- Ventilation: no drilled holes needed — opening the tub for a few seconds every 5–7 days exchanges the air completely.
- Duration: 52–60 days at 31.5 °C.

Candling
A fertile, developing egg shows a clear reddish vein network under a bright torch. A slug is smaller, yellowish and collapses early. If a bad egg is stuck to good ones, leave it until it separates or starts to mould.
Small surface mould spots are harmless — wipe them and improve airflow. Mould becomes a problem only alongside collapse and a foul smell.
Hatching
Neonates cut the shell with an egg tooth and may stay inside for 24–48 hours absorbing the yolk sac. Do not pull them out — premature removal tears yolk vessels and causes haemorrhage.
Assisted hatching is justified only if, 48 hours after the first pip, the remaining eggs show no activity. Then cut gently at the top with rounded scissors, leaving the membranes intact.
Hatchlings go into individual tubs with lightly damp paper and a water bowl. The first shed follows in 7–14 days, and only then is the first meal offered, in the evening and in darkness.
Short list of things not to do
- Do not separate stuck eggs.
- Do not rotate eggs after the first day.
- Do not let condensation drip onto the eggs.
- Do not exceed 32.5 °C, not even for an hour.
- Do not open the tub daily "just in case".
- Do not remove neonates before the yolk is absorbed.
- Do not feed before the first shed.
